Seaton Seafront: Coastal Defence and Promenade Enhancement

In response to a Coastal Strategy Study by Hartlepool Borough Council, a section of the sea defence wall along Seaton seafront was replaced and strengthened to protect homes and businesses from coastal erosion. This project also enabled the widening of the existing promenade and the creation of a new access point to the beach.

Geoquest designed a robust solution capable of withstanding wave impacts and accommodating differential water levels based on local tidal conditions. The innovative design included burying the majority of the wall beneath the beach level, ensuring long-term stability even with predicted future reductions in beach levels.

The concrete facing panels, manufactured by Geoquest, featured glass fibre reinforcing bars to eliminate the risk of corrosion and reduce panel thickness. Both the soil reinforcement and the connection to the concrete panels were fully synthetic, enhancing durability in the harsh marine environment.

To complement the coastal setting, the facing panels were created with a patterned finish. Geoquest offer a variety of off-the-shelf patterns or bespoke designs to meet client requirements.

Following the project’s completion, Kieran Bostock, Hartlepool Council’s senior engineer, remarked:

“The work has been really successful, and we have had no major problems on site. Everything has gone as planned. It has been done to protect Seaton from coastal erosion, and this should provide protection to properties, shops, and Northumbria Water’s sewerage works for the next 100 years.” – Hartlepool Mail, 2014
